Simone Inzaghi: Lazio’s Destiny In Their Own Hands

Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi has said that the club have their destiny in their own hands with victories in their remaining league games assuring them of Champions League football. The Capital outfit have a tricky fixture against Torino this weekend and Inzaghi has urged his players to maintain the focus on the current fixture.

Speaking in his weekly conference, he said: “We have a very important match against a side with fine players who won at the Olimpico earlier this season. Attitude will count for a lot, so we must treat this as a one-off game. I asked the players not to think about the remaining fixtures, but only about Torino. Our destiny is in our hands. It’s a complicated fixture list, especially with Inter in the final match, but we have to treat Torino like a Final.”

Prior to this weekend, Lazio had just a one-point advantage over fifth-placed Inter Milan but they now have the luxury of extending this gap after the Nerazzurri lost out to Juventus. Luciano Spalletti’s side had done an exceptional job to hold onto a 2-1 lead against the Bianconeri with just 10 men but their efforts came to no avail with the league leaders scoring twice in the final five minutes.

As a result, Lazio could extend their lead over Inter to four points with a win over Torino and this may offer them breathing space for the remainder of the campaign. Lazio and Inter are due to face each other in the final game week of the season but the match could be a relatively dead-rubber, should Inzaghi’s side avoid dropping points.

Meanwhile, the race for the Scudetto may go down to the wire with just four points separating Napoli and Juventus. Napoli can reduce the deficit to just one point with a win over Fiorentina this weekend and the title could be decided upon whether Juventus can pick up a victory over AS Roma on the road next month.
