Napoli kept their Champions League hopes alive with a confident 3-0 defeat of Lazio over the weekend. Jose Callejon and Lorenzo Insigne combined to redeem the plunging confidence of the team following their Italian Cup exit to Juventus.

Had Napoli failed to get the desired result, it would have put their Champions League dream in doubts. Ahead of the trip to the StadioOlimpico, Napoli were yet to lose to Lazio since April 2012.

SergejMilinkovic-Savicwent close to scoring twice for the hosts before Callejon opened in the 25th minute. MarekHamsik and Dries Mertens combined well to set him up before he drilled home.

Just before the referee called time in the first half, Insigne fired Mertens through ball wide. After the break, the Italian did not waste the next chance he got. Allan chipped the ball to him and he sent it to the far bottom corner to send the visitors two goals up.

Lazio came back into the match fighting, forcing the Napoli side to go cautious. Coach Maurizio Sarri pulled off the Spanish goalscorer for midfielder Piotr Zielinski. The move paid off as Napoli sealed the game off through Insigne.

The win earns Napoli three points but they remain four points behind AS Roma. They go seven points above Lazio as they focus on maintaining their Champions League spot.

Lazio would have to end the aspirations of Atalanta who are pushing for a Europa League spot. Inter was defeated 2-1 by Crotone, boostingAtalanta’s hopes of making Europe.

On the other hand, it seems the Serie A title is done and dusted as leaders Juventus move nine points clear. They defeated Chievo on Saturday 2-0. Roma follows with a 3-0 victory over Bologna.
