Lazio managed to get a much-needed victory against Sassuolo in the Italian Serie A just before the international break. This second successive victory in the league was important for the club after having suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats in the previous two matches. The club will come back into the league campaign after the international break with a lot of confidence according to manager Stefano Pioli. The former Fiorentina defender assumed the role as the head coach of Lazio in 2014. He replaced Vladimír Petkovic, who was sacked after a string of poor results.
Pioli is aware that European qualification is a must for him in order to remain in the job. Despite the two consecutive victories, Lazio find themselves just inside the top 10 of the table. Such is the competition for the top three places in the Italian Serie A this season that Lazio need to put together a five match winning run in order to get close to the top of the table. One player was sent off for each side in the match, while Lazio scored all of their three goals before the 35th minute. Berardi almost turned out to be the hero for the away team after his two goals almost helped them snatch a point.
“We showed the heart and determination to repeat our previous victory over Palermo. Sassuolo caused us problems but we managed to win. We’re a team and we take confidence from this win. We know our own limits and we know what we want to achieve this season,” said Pioli. Upon the return to league football this weekend, the club take on Fiorentina in a difficult away match. Fiorentina are one of the clubs challenging for the European places the season. They have been enjoying a much better form than Lazio so far this campaign.
