Lazio almost managed to seal a European spot last season under the guidance of manager Vladimir Petkovic. They also managed to win the title in the form of the Coppa Italia last season.
This was the first trophy that was won by the club since 2009. Manager Petkovic has said that he definitely wants Lazio to achieve more success in the coming seasons as he does not want to stop with a Coppa Italia victory alone. This success has helped repay the faith and support shown by the Lazio fans according to the manager.
Lazio will be looking to improve their league position this campaign. They were in with a shout of finishing in the top three positions of the league, which would have given them the chance to play in the Champions league group stages. However, an end of season slump meant that they eventually finished last season in the seventh position. This saw them miss out on the chance to qualify for the Europa league through the league places. Despite this, Petkovic has said that there can be a lot of positives taken from last season including finishing above 2010 Champions league winners Inter Milan.
The Milan club finished the season in the 10th position.
“This trophy only repaid the fans who stayed close to us and provided their support. I thank them all, as what we achieved was down to everyone. We will not rest on our laurels, as we’ll try to prove what we can do more and more. So many fans have been with us during pre-season training and I hope they will stand by us throughout the season too. The players were able to work at their best and I hope we can continue like this,” said Petkovic. The club recently begun their pre-season tour.
