Serie A giant Inter Milan embarrassed Cagliari when both sides met in the league. Inter put up a spirited second half display on Monday to end the game 5-1. Inter demolished the Sardinians at the Stadio Sant’Elia with Ever Banega, Ivan Perisic and Mauro Icardi contributing the goals.

Inter have been focused on changing their fortunes in the league after several mishaps on the way. They are now vying for the Europa League spot alongside Atalanta.

The first twenty minutes was quite competitive for both sides until the hosts chickened out of the clash. Inter took advantage, an impressive Banega connected with Perisic to get the opener. They did not rest on their oars as they found another within minutes as Banega curled his effort in.

Cagliari did not want to end poorly so they fought hard to get one back through Marco Borriello. Perisic scored in the second half, Roberto Gagliardini scored a rare goal, and Icardi converted a 67th minute penalty kick to get his 17th of the season.

Coach Stefano Pioli still has work to do on the team as they gave the ball too cheaply too many times in the game – Antonio Candreva and Geoffrey Kondogbia are the biggest culprits. Samir Kandanovic deserves to be celebrated for his efforts in goal. Banega and Perisic were the match winners but Eder came on from the bench to add some power as well. They now head across to Rome to face Lazio in fine form, with the last few remaining tickets for the clash available here.

With eleven games remaining in this campaign the rest of the matches are a do-or-die affair as clubs struggle to end well. Napoli defeated Roma 2-1 to keep their chances open, but it also reduced the chances that Juventus – who played a draw with Udinese – would be beaten to the Scudetto this year.
