The Italian side Lazio recently played an Europa League match against Sparta Praha and this game finished with a 1-1 draw as both sides managed to score 1 goal and the decisive game will be played on March 17 at the home stadium of Lazio in Rome.

Stefano Pioli

Alberto Mallenco was the referee of this game and the Spanish official decided to stop the match for a moment due to the racist chants that the supporters of Lazio were shouting, every single time the Sparta Praha player Costa made contact with the ball.

Because of the behavior from the fans of Lazio, the Italian club might be sanctioned and this isn’t the first time that Lazio has been sanctioned by UEFA.

Earlier in February, Lazio received a partial stadium ban and they had to play 2 of their Serie A matches with their home stadium being partially closed and this was due to the racist chants that the supporters of Lazio were shouting at the opposing team, in this case it was against players of Napoli. Along with the stadium ban, Lazio was also fined with €50,000.

According to the manager of Lazio, Stefano Pioli stated that Costa shouldn’t had stated anything in relation to the chants of the fans and that the decision of the referee to stop the game for a few moments in order for him to help stop the racial abuse was something that should not had been done.

"It was Costa who complained about the situation. Whenever I am on the field, I don't feel the cold or the heat because I'm so focused on the match. It's a bit like when you are betting on a horse race with StanJames, and you can't see or hear anything other than the race going on infront of you. I didn't hear anything. The referee told me it was all under control and I was a bit surprised. I didn't see any of our players have to go over to placate our fans either." Lazio’s Stefano Pioli said after the game was over.
